This position will report to the Natural Resource Unit Manager. Job Responsibilities

Plan Trail Crew workload, schedule staff, allocate equipment and materials, layout jobs, instruct employees in how to accomplish the work, observe the safe and efficient progress of the work, and review the finished product for conformance to standards and plans. Personal contacts are with department directors, managers, crew chiefs, surveyors, engineers and private contractors to coordinate work projects and with vendors to discuss equipment purchases. Map trails and assess and record condition of trail assets. Contact with the public is to coordinate and support volunteers and provide information to questions or complaints. Examples of duties include :

  • Assigns daily work and set section priorities for subordinate staff during daily dispatch.
  • Monitoring and providing quality assurance and inspection for the repair, construction, and maintenance of trail features, including building service roads and trails, building and maintaining wooden, stone, and metal / composite bridges, ramps, posts, culverts, fences, boardwalks, and structures
  • Reading and interpreting construction blueprints, project specifications, and reviewing contractor submittals.
  • Developing cost estimates and managing project expenditures.
  • Coordinating construction activities with the Parks Engineer, Parks Environmental leads, and site survey teams.
  • Collecting inventory and asset mapping using specialized tools, including GIS, Field Maps, ArcMap, AMWO, and site survey tools.
  • Training and mentoring trails staff and Youth Green Corps participants, including construction techniques, reading and interpreting plans, plant identification, and trail construction standards
  • Coordinating emergency repair response and workflow with other teams and divisions in the natural crew area, urban forestry and arborists, ground division, plumbing shops, electrical shop, and machine shops.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications : Four years of public works experience including two years of training in administration of construction projects (Combination of education, training and will be evaluated on an individual basis for comparability).

Desired Qualifications - You will be successful if you have the following experience, skills, and abilities :

  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
  • Knowledge and experience providing quality insurance and inspection for the repair, construction, and maintenance of trail structures.
  • Experience providing training and mentorship to trails staff, contractors, and volunteers including construction techniques, plant identification, equipment operation, trail standards and practices.
  • Experience working in forested areas and environmentally critical areas including wetlands and shorelines and implementing best practices for both safety and environmental compliance.
  • Experience planning team and program work in near and longer-term time scales, including setting annual work goals and setting and measuring performance metrics.
  • Experience supervising the daily work of a crew including ensuring assigned tasks are completed in a timely manner, delegating crew members in the field to assigned roles, and providing performance reviews.
  • Knowledge and experience implementing the Core Competencies described in this profile.
  • Special Working Conditions :

  • Perform demanding and physically challenging work, including lifting more than 50 pounds up to waist level.
  • Bend, stoop and dig for extended periods of time.
  • Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, heavy traffic; entering confined spaces (such as maintenance chambers, holes and excavations).
  • Work any shift or schedule, including nights, evenings, weekends and holidays.
  • Respond to emergency conditions resulting in overtime with little or no notice.
  • Drive in both urban street and rural environment, including unimproved roads.
  • May be required to operate trucks on mountainous logging roads.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Required to spend long periods of time driving trucks, often in heavy traffic and under adverse weather conditions.
  • Handle or work near toxic / hazardous substances; and work outdoors in all types of weather
  • The full salary range for this position is $45.30 - $48.98 Hourly.
